The Most Holy Theotokos and the Ever Virgin Mary is a very discreet presence in the Gospel Books and throughout the whole Bible, but, at the same time, a prominant and vivid presence in the Church’s iconograghy, ceremonial services and especially in the believers’ personal prayers. From this viewpoint, the Akathist Hymns are a permanent source of inspiration for different icons, representing various aspects of the worship addresed to the „Lady of heavens”, that mirror her close relation with Our Saviour Jesus Christ, one the one hand, and with us, the believers, whom are introduced in the relation with God through her intercession and prayers. In addition to their spiritual importance, the Akathist Hymns have a symbolic, and even literary value, due to the unique images in which the icons of the Holy Virgin Mary are „painted in words”, metaphorical icons, that are not adressed to the physical eyes, but to the “mysterious sight of the hearts”.
